The Levels

The maths and English functional skills qualification starts at entry level 1. They follow the same process by going to entry level 2, entry level 3, level 1 and then level 2. The qualification that is recognised by establishments such as universities and is a GCSE equivalent is the level 2.

Exam Boards

The City and Guilds functional skills level 2 is the most frequently taken exam, hundreds of thousands of people sit this exam each year. Even though this is the most popular, Edexcel is also a large exam board and there are different awarding bodies that supply these exams. The UK government set the curriculum for most of the exam boards but there are different functional skills courses that you should consider.

What is a functional skills qualification?
The functional skills qualification in both maths and English is a GCSE equivalent but only if you receive the level 2 qualification. This is a beneficial qualification if you didn’t achieve a GCSE grade C or 4.

Is there a difference between the two exam, if so what are they?
One of the biggest differences between the two is the content, the GCSE exams have more content. The functional skills exams also use everyday examples as their questions.

Is the functional skills exam easier than the GCSE?
This question is difficult since it’s subjective to each person and what they find easier. If you prefer the questions to be everyday situations that you can relate to then the functional skills exam is more for you.

How long does it take to complete a functional skills qualification?
There is not a set time, everybody has a different situation that impacts the timeline such as when they need the qualification by. Leicester Tutor Company will create a programme that is personalised for each learner to help understand when you will complete the functional skills qualification.

Is this qualification recognised by employers?
This qualification is a GCSE equivalent so yes it will help you to get a job.

What is the pass mark for the functional skills exams?
The pass mark for this qualification changes but it is normally between 50-60% but it all depends on how difficult the paper is.

Can I get a free functional skills exam?
There is funding by the government for some people, but there is a criteria that you have to meet to get the funding. If you are over the age of 19 then unfortunately you don’t meet their requirements so you will have to fund for the functional skills courses yourself or you can look at apprenticeships programmes to see if they will help fund the course. MME is the best provider since it is the cheapest for the online English functional skills exams.

Is there an option to take an online functional skills maths level 2 exam?
